State Police investigating in-custody death of Sebastian County jail inmate

FORT SMITH, Arkansas — The Arkansas State Police have been requested by the Sebastian County Sheriff’s Department to investigate an in-custody death of an inmate Friday night.

State Police say that 36-year-old Jacob W. Honeycutt of Fort Smith died while being detained at the Sebastian County Detention Center on July 31.

According to police, an inmate inside the detention facility alerted officers at about 8:30 p.m. that Honeycutt appeared to having a seizure.

Nurses inside the detention center and sheriff’s department personnel administered life-saving measures to Honeycutt and arranged for him to be transported to a Baptist Hospital, which is 0.8 miles away from the detention center. Honeycutt was pronounced dead at Baptist Hospital at 9:04 p.lm.

Honeycutt’s body is being transported to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory where a manner and cause of death will be determined. Special agents of the Arkansas State Police criminal investigation division are leading the investigation.
