State Police investigating hit-and-run of baseball player

MONTICELLO — The Arkansas State Police is investigating a hit-and-run incident that struck a Southeast Oklahoma University baseball player Saturday night.

Joseph D. Cerda, Jr., of San Antonio, Texas, was seriously injured when he was hit by a vehicle traveling north along U.S.-425 at about 8;10 p.m., police say. Cerda was among teammates who were crossing the highway to get food at a local restaurant.

According to police via Cerda’s teammates, Cerda tried to jump out of the path of the car but was struck. The driver of the vehicle, described as “dark color,” did not stop. Cerda was transported to a nearby hospital and later airlifted to a Little Rock hospital where he has undergone treatment.

Southeast Oklahoma was in Monticello for a baseball game against University of Arkansas-Monticello.
