The Rangers lost the Royals on Tuesday in Surprise, 5-4. Joey Gallo singled and walked in 3 trips, as he is 2-for-5 with a walk in 2 games to begin Cactus League play. Rougned Odor hit a 2-run triple in the 5th inning to account for the Rangers’ only runs over the first 8 frames. Odor has hit safely in each of his first 2 games this spring. Todd Frazier went 1-for-2, as he is now 3-for-5 with a walk over his last 6 plate appearances. Nick Ciuffo doubled in the 5th. Brian Flynn, Rafael Montero, Nick Goody, Tim Dillard, and Demarcus Evans each pitched scoreless innings in relief.
Josh Jung, the Rangers’ first round pick in the 2019 June draft, grounded out as a pinch-hitter to open a 9th inning in which the Rangers scored twice to cut the club’s deficit to one run. Matt Duffy flied out to right field to end the game as runners were stranded at 2nd base and 3rd base. Windy conditions in Surprise made fly balls a challenge for fielders, and many balls dropped that would have been caught in normal conditions.
The Rangers will travel to Scottsdale tomorrow for a 2:10 p.m. CT contest against the Colorado Rockies. LHP Kolby Allard (0-0, 18.00) will face Rox RHP Ubaldo Jiménez (0-0, -).
