Leody Taveras went 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, an RBI, and stolen base. Taveras hit a tie-breaking double in the 7th, then stole third base, but was stranded when Andy Ibáñez lined out to end the inning. Ibáñez reached safely 3 times, going 2-for-3 with 2 singles and a walk. Eli White was 1-for-3 with a triple, walk, and run scored.
In the third inning, Taveras doubled and scored on Curtis Terry’s 2-run double, as Texas held an early 3-0 lead. Terry went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI as the cleanup batter in his first start of the spring. Brock Holt walked twice against his former club. Charlie Culberson tripled and scored the go-ahead run in the 7th.
Starter Kyle Cody retired 7 of his first 8 batters faced, allowing just an infield single over that span, but he permitted 2 runs in his 3rd and final inning. Hyeon-jong Yang posted 2.0 scoreless innings, retiring each of his final 5 batters faced with 3 strikeouts. Yang was in line for the win before the Brewers scored in the 7th to forge a tie.
The Rangers and Royals played to a 3-3 tie in a 7-inning B game on Saturday at Frank White Field (Royals Field 2) in Surprise. Mike Foltynewicz (3.1 SHO IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 3 SO) faced one batter over the minimum as the starting pitcher and recorded 4 outs in his 3rd and final inning. Matt Bush set down all 3 batters faced in his one scoreless inning. Adolis Garcia hit a 2-run home run to right field off Jakob Junis in the 3rd inning, which also included a broken-bat RBI single by Josh Jung. Kansas City scored 3 runs off Josh Sborz to tie the game at 3-3 in the 5th inning, aided by a pair of seeing-eye singles through the middle. Texas and Kansas City are slated for another B game on Sunday at 11 am AZ time on Nolan Ryan Field in Surprise.
The Rangers host the Rockies on Sunday in Surprise, a 3:05 p.m. CT contest ahead of Monday’s off date. RHP Kohei Arihara (0-1, 6.23) is scheduled to make his third start for Texas against Rockies RHP Jon Gray (0-0, 4.50). A radio broadcast will air on 105.3 The FAN in the DFW market, with Matt Hicks and Jared Sandler calling the action.
Texas will also play a B game for a third straight day on Sunday, hosting Kansas City on Nolan Ryan Field for a 5-inning contest beginning at 11:00 a.m. AZ time.
