Nesbit goes 3-of-3, leads hitting Hogs 11-9 over Vols

Arkansas past Kent State

FAYETTEVILLE — Jacob Nesbit produced 3-of-3 from the plate to help the No. 6 Arkansas Razorbacks take game one against the Tennessee Volunteers 11-9 Friday night at Baum-Walker Stadium.

The redshirt freshman collected a career-high six RBI along with a double and a home run. Nesbit nailed a three-run dinger in the fifth inning that tied the game 7-7. He later hit a two-run double to give Arkansas an 11-7 lead in the sixth.

“He came up clutch,” said Arkansas coach Dave Van Horn. “Obviously, he got the sac fly and had the three-run homer, the big double down the line, drove in two more. Again, we wouldn’t be sitting here talking about a win if he didn’t have the big night. That’s what it takes, somebody picking you up, somebody having a big night.

“Tennessee, they came out and swung the bats. It ended up turning into kind of a slugfest. I don’t think either coach probably saw that coming. I know I didn’t.”

Jorge Polanco had four hits, including a two-run homer, and drove in four runs to lead the Minnesota Twins to their fourth straight win, 9-5 over the Houston Astros

The home run from Nesbit was his third in 2019 and his second in the past three games. In the past four, Nesbit has had 12 runs on seven hits and now has a .300 batting average for the season.

“Yeah, great night,” said Nesbit. “I got a fastball and just put my best swing on it and thankfully it went out. The team really put together a good offensive showing today and it was really good to see.  It was a fun one for sure.”

Arkansas moves to 32-11 overall with a 13-6 record in Southeastern Conference play. Tennessee is 31-12 overall with a 9-10 record in conference play.

The Razorbacks and Volunteers meet for game two Saturday with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. Pregame is at 6:00 p.m. on Fox Sports Radio 1400 AM.
