Indians crush Rangers 9-2 in Surprise

Rangers 2-0 win Mariners

The Rangers lost to the Indians, 9-2, in 9 complete innings on Tuesday in Surprise.

Joey Gallo hit a solo home run off Cleveland starter Aaron Civale in the 1st inning, his MLB-leading 5th long ball through 6 spring games and just 15 plate appearances. Gallo is already more than halfway to the Texas club record for spring home runs (8 by Mark Teixeira in 2003). He owns a .429/.467/1.571/2.038 (6-14) slash line, accounting for 5 of the club’s 10 spring HR and 9 of its 26 RBI.

Nick Solak added a solo home run onto the center field berm off Logan Allen in the 5th inning, his 1st long ball of the spring. Solak has a hit and has scored a run in 3 of his last 4 games. Anderson Tejeda doubled in his first spring plate appearance after entering as a reserve.

Starter Wes Benjamin (3.0 IP, 1 R-ER, 3 SO) delivered another strong outing for Texas, holding the Indians without a hit following Bobby Bradley’s one-out RBI double in the 1st. The left-hander has a 1.50 ERA (1 ER/6.0 IP) with no walks/4 strikeouts through 3 games/2 starts this spring. Matt Bush made his spring debut with a scoreless 4th inning, working around a 2-out triple by Billy Hamilton.

Cleveland’s Daniel Johnson hit 2 home runs on the day, going deep off of Cole Winn (L, 0.1 IP, 4 R-ER) and former Indian Hunter Wood (1.1 IP, 1 R-ER, 4 SO) in the 5th and 6th innings, respectively. The home run was the only ball put in play against Wood, who struck out the other 4 batters he faced over his 1.1 innings. Winn was charged with the loss in the first spring training ‘A’ game of his career. Texas and Cleveland combined for 21 strikeouts and just one walk.

The Rangers travel to Peoria on Wednesday for a 2:10 p.m. CT contest against the Seattle Mariners. RHP Jharel Cotton (0-0, 40.50) is scheduled to make his 2nd appearance/1st start of the spring for Texas opposite Mariners LHP Justus Sheffield (0-0, 0.00). There will be no Rangers radio or television broadcast.
