Cleveland County man charged in Jan. vehicle crash death

State Police

The Arkansas State Police says they have charged a 60-year-old Cleveland County man in connection with a vehicle crash death from January.

On June 16, Stephen Clark of the Woodlawn community surrendered to state police at the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office where he was processed and later taken before a circuit judge who set bond at $15,000.

State Police criminal investigation division special agents charged Clark with negligent homicide in connection with a Jan. 2, 2022 single vehicle crash at around 9:45 a.m. that day.

State law enforcement says that Clark was the driver of a late model Jeep traveling northbound on U.S.-63 near his home when he lost control of the vehicle which left the roadway striking a fence, then impacted with a tree.

According to state law enforcement, 60-year-old Mary Clark, Stephen Clark’s wife, was a passenger in the vehicle and died at the crash scene.

Clark sustained injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to a Pine Bluff hospital.

State Police say a state trooper investigated the crash and determined Clark was traveling to fast for conditions and was believed to be intoxicated.

The crash investigation was submitted to a prosecuting attorney on Feb. 1. The prosecuting attorney subsequently requested additional investigative work to be completed by the criminal investigation division.
