State Police

The Arkansas State Police Say they have made an arrest following a shootout with a 33-year-old man that ended with a pursuit on foot in Little Rock.

According to police, Marlo Akins abandoned his vehicle and led police on a foot chase.

At around 12:23 a.m. Sunday, police say that the pursuit began near Interstate 30 and Geyer Springs Road after an attempted traffic stop. Akins had previously been charged in connection with a Little Rock murder last year, according to police. Police say that Akins was out on bond after he was charged in 2020 with first-degree murder following a shooting at a southwest Little Rock nightclub in June 2020.

A short time after the start of the pursuit, police say, Akins shoved a female passenger from the car he was driving. Akins then opened fire with a gun aimed at the pursuing trooper, police say.

The vehicle was abandoned at 35 Eaton Street in southwest Little Rock and Akins fled on foot as he exchanged gunfire with the pursuing trooper, according to police.

Arkansas State Police were able to converge on the area and take Akins into custody four hours later. Police say they recovered a 9 millimeter handgun with a 50 round ammunition drum, and the weaponry was believed to have been used by Akins.

Akins was charged with aggravated assault, fleeing possession of firearms by certain persons, and executing a terroristic act — all felonies.

The woman who was shoved from the vehicle, police say, was 31-year-old Jerika Presley, who police say was not seriously injured. Neither the trooper involved nor Akins were injured by gunfire.
