Knights Celebrate Six Straight Wins for the Hammer Bowl

The Centerpoint Knights and the Bismarck Lions played their regular season-ending rivalry game Thursday night. The Knights were needing a victory in the game to put themselves in position to make the playoffs for a sixth straight season. The Knights 5-4 overall and 2-4 in conference came out inspired, took control early and as the game moved through the first half begin to dominate the 2-7 Lions, who were trying to avoid a winless conference season for the third consecutive year. The Knights started off the game by kicking off and pinning Bismarck inside their own 20-yard line the defense forced a three-and-out and Centerpoint would take over after a fair catch by Landon Way their own 40-yard yard line. After a big pass play from Owen Bright to Austin Browning that got the Knights inside the 10-yard line it was Owen Bright getting the first score of the game on a 5 yard run. Then the Centerpoint defense chipped in as Gibson Lybrand, who is no stranger to the end zone, picked off and pass by Bismarck’s James Kegley and returned it 35 yards for Centerpoint’s second touchdown of the first quarter.

Centerpoint defense would set up their offense with great field position either by stopping the Bismarck offense on 4th down or forcing a turnover leading to a 2-yard scoring run by Blake Crawford and later in quarter and 11 yard touchdown pass from Owen Bright to Kolton Carver. Before the end of the first quarter, the Lions would score on a short pass over the middle from James Kegley to Dylan Clayton that covered 48 yards in all most of it being done but Clayton himself running away from the Centerpoint defense to the corner of the end zone, but that would be the only points Bismarck would score all night as they would trail the Knights at the end of the first quarter 28-6. Has the second quarter began the Centerpoint defense seem to just get better as the game wore on and after a sack on 4th down gave the Knights the ball in Lion territory Bright would find a wide open Eric Valdez for a 39 yard touchdown. Then just before the end of the first half Owen Bright would score on his second 5 yard rushing touchdown of the game.

With senior Eric Valdez going 6 for 6 on extra points the Knights took a 42-6 lead into the locker room. With the mercy rule enforced to begin 2nd half the Knights played backups and 9th graders for almost the entire 2nd half as Gavin Nutt a junior running back who would get his first career rushing attempt in the 3rd quarter ended up with a team high 12 rushing attempts for the game. Neither team really threatened to score until Coach Rogers started rotating senior linemen into game to give them a chance to run with the ball instead of block, a little reward on a successful season and the hard work those seniors have put in over their careers as the final minutes of the game wound down the Knights would begin to celebrate their 6th straight win in the series and hold onto the trophy that goes to winner for at least another year.
