Centerpoint Knights Lose a Close Game Against Cardinals 40-36

Centerpoint Knights went head to head with the Haskell Harmony Grove Cardinals Friday at their Diamond Bank home stadium in Rosboro. It was a decently close game, with the ending score 40-36. Haskell scores touchdowns on their first two drives of the game on 38 yards and 2-yard runs. Owen bright runs in from one yard out in between those two scores by the Cardinals and after one quarter Haskell leads Centerpoint 14-7

Eric Valdez catches a pass from Bright at the 10-yard line and goes in untouched for a 30 yard to reception, marking Valdez first receiving touchdown of his career and tying the game up for the second time at 14. Haskell would retake the lead on a 61-yard drive that took only 2:04 of game clock and was capped off by Jake brooks 4-yard scoring run. Valdez blocked the extra point and kept the lead at 6 for Haskell. Centerpoint would then convert on 3rd and 14 around midfield and on 3rd and 12 from the cardinal 14-yard line with a 2nd touchdown pass from Bright to Valdez. Valdez made the point after attempt and Centerpoint takes their first lead of the game 21-20 with only 22 seconds left in 1st half. Hunter Hilson would complete 12 of 13 passes in first half with his only incomplete pass coming on a hail Mary at end of 1st half. Halftime score Knights 21 Cardinals 20.

Five lead changes in 2nd half as Valdez catches his 3rd touchdown of the night giving Centerpoint the lead, but leads were short lived for the Knights all game long. Senior quarter back Hunter Hilson answered every time Centerpoint took a lead in the game either through the air or running with ball or just simply handing off to his running back Jake Brooks who seemed to gain 8-10 yards on every carry of 2nd half. Centerpoint last lead came on the first play of 4th quarter on a 2-yard run by Junior quarterback Owen Bright. A successful 2-point conversion was made on a pass to Valdez giving Eric Valdez 24 points for the game, 3 touchdowns, 4 extra points, and the 2-point conversion. The lead was short lived though as Hilson and the Cardinals would need just over a minute to retake lead due in large part to the 56-yard catch and run by Logan Whitley that set up a 1-yard scoring run by Jake Brooks. The touchdown would be the 11th of game and 5th in 2nd half and still 10:22 left to play in the game. For the first time in the game the knights would fail to answer a Cardinal touchdown with one of their own. They would drive down to the Cardinal 11 and have it first and 10 from there, but due to a penalty and a loss yardage play would be forced into a 4th and long and an attempted pass into end zone fell incomplete. Haskell would pick up several 1st downs running the clock down to only 2:34 before turning ball over on downs back to the Knights. Knights returned the favor in 4 plays and after one more Cardinal first down it was knelt down time for Haskell as they took a very important conference victory in Rosboro to move to 3-1 in conference and 5-2 overall. Knights drop to 4-3 overall and now just 1-3 in conference play. The Knights will need to win their last 3 games of the season to avoid their first losing season in conference play since 2012.

Knights will travel next week to Glen Rose as they take on the Beavers. If you are unable to make the game, please tune into 98.9 FM, stream through our website or through our Freed AM Sports app. David Tidwell and Chris Lindsey will have your play by play and color commentary, respectfully.
